What the Heck Happened to People During the City Council Redistricting Process?

What the Heck Happened to People During the City Council Redistricting Process?

I really felt like I needed to address what I believe is one of the strangest things the Morgan Hill city council has ever done. The initial adoption of what had been deemed as an illegal redistricting map by the majority of the city council before a conclusive court decision, and after the court ordered adoption of a legal map, some on the council wanted to appeal even without a legitimate legal argument that reinforced or bettered the original argument.

Campaign Housekeeping, who's harassing who?

Campaign Housekeeping, who's harassing who?

Hello neighbors and friends, I’ve been asked a lot of questions on NextDoor and other venues about what is going on in the City of Morgan Hill and what role I’m playing in all of this.

I am going to try to respond here in my ‘Housekeeping” posts periodically and on NextDoor (since most questions seem to arise from that venue).

The first question I’m going to respond to is one from a gentleman who keeps asking me for a public apology for an encounter which took place last June. I have asked politely if we could drop the whole issue but he persists so feel I have no option but to tell my side of the story.

A Candidate's Journey in Our Town by John McKay - The BIG DAY is here - wohoo or uh oh?

Well, it’s that time. I’ve been campaigning for about four months and I’ve learned a lot of things but it’s now all coming to a climax.

As I write this it’s time for all of us to finish voting and the counting of ballots is just a couple hours away. I’m nervous but I feel good about this campaign.

I stayed honest and did not throw the stones I had, I have to live with myself and I do. My form of aggressive campaigning is aggressively getting out more information – honest information. Did it work? I may never know since there are so many different influences but I would not change anything I did, except to start sooner…

A Candidate's Journey in Our Town by John McKay - THE NEWSLETTER IS OUT!

Hello Neighbor,

If we’ve not yet met, my name is John McKay and I’m working hard to be the first council person elected to represent the newly created Morgan Hill City Council District D, simply described as as all neighborhoods east of Hwy 101…

In the many discussions I’ve already had I rarely feel there’s been enough time to fully share the important details of what is going on in our community. I hope the information contained in the following pages will help complete those conversations or start new ones…

A Candidate's Journey in Our Town by John McKay - SB35 is the Scourge of Growth Control

A Candidate's Journey in Our Town by John McKay - SB35 is the Scourge of Growth Control

SB35 = newest threat to our growth control which allows us to practice smart growth.

Senate Bill 35 was introduced by Senator Weiner (let’s help to campaign against him..) and it basically is the hammer to enforce the 1982 Housing Accountability Act… Hello Threat to Growth Control…

A Candidate's Journey in Our Town by John McKay - So, Did I Support the Catholic High School?

I have been asked about my position on the proposed Catholic High school at Murphy and Tennant Avenues several times so felt it deserved a written response.

I am on the record as supporting the Catholic High school.

In coming to this conclusion I removed the label “Catholic”…

A Candidates Journey in Our Town by John McKay - The Whole Enchilada on the Residential Construction Boom

Residential growth has been a major concern of Morgan Hill residents many times over the years. As a result we are one of the only cities in California that put in place a residential development control system.

So how come we have an issue with what we see as runaway residential development over the last few years? Shouldn’t our growth control system curb all this?

 The Explanation:

The Great Recession put a backlog of approximately 1,800 allocated residential units on the books which have exploded into construction since 2014…

A Candidate's Journey in Our Town by John McKay - Have you seen my little friend?

We’ve been living in Jackson Oaks about five years now. Kind of gotten to know some our neighbors but like so many we’re busy so it’s mostly just a friendly wave and at most a short chat. Maybe someday that’ll change.

However we have one neighbor that we’ve gotten to know pretty well over the years, I call him Arthur because he is a dashing fellow.

He’s a true native Californian. With big beautiful brown eyes and thick shiny hair he could be a model. His jaunty gate and

A Candidate's Journey in Our Town by John McKay - It's Not Always a Level Playing Field

So what just happened that made me spill my milk? The Morgan Hill Times has published a couple of articles where I don’t think all parties were treated equally, neither the issues nor the people involved which includes all candidates and sitting councilmembers too. Not quite a drive by shooting, kind of closer to a Vespa rider with a whiffle ball bat whacking you up side the head, looks harmless but still hurts.

A Candidate's Journey in Our Town by John McKay - A Level Playing Field?

As a candidate I’m finding out you want every opportunity to shine, prove that you understand the issues, and are prepared to make the decisions that are best for the community. The variables you control in doing this are your message, how often you get in front of the public with events/walking door to door/social media, your visibility in signage/ads/website, and how much money you earn to do all that.

A Candidate’s Journey in Our Town by John McKay - I did It!

A few weeks ago I stepped out of the relative obscurity of being a fairly private Morgan Hillan that was somewhat involved in local volunteer work. Any visibility I had was directed back toward the community as it was the focus, not me. I have since stepped out into what could be the fracas of local politics where the focus is on the person and not the community, or should I say the focus is on the community right through a person.
